The Champions League has finally reached the group stage, following a summer packed with qualifying matches. With the early stages out of the way, we have some huge matches to kick off the tournament proper. We’ve – inevitably – got a couple of groups of death, both involving English sides. On top of that, there’s a rematch of one of last season’s best quarter-final ties. With September packed full of football, the return of Europe’s top competition has to be a highlight.
There are some huge matches coming up this week, games which could set the tone for a team’s European campaign. However, the Champions League group stages do tend to be quite open, before the away goal rule kicks in. We expect to see a few high scoring games this week, so we’ve picked out a both teams to score accumulator for the Champions League’s opening round of fixtures. - Barcelona v Juventus (8/11 with Betfair) – Barcelona and Juve met in last season’s quarters, but both should be more open in the group stage. We expect goals in this clash, with Juve looking a little shaky following the sale of Bonucci.
- Roma v Atletico Madrid (10/11 with Betfred) – Roma head into the new season desperate to make an impact in Europe. They should be able to trouble Atletico at home, but we can’t see the likes of Griezmann staying quiet here, as Atleti have a great scoring record in Europe.
Wednesday 13th September 2017
- Feyenoord v Man City (13/16 with Bet365) – Man City’s defence is always a little vulnerable, and we see that being the case against the Dutch champions. Feyenoord beat United at home last term, and we can see them getting a goal here.
- Liverpool v Sevilla (8/13 with Coral) – These two saw both teams score in each of their legs in the play-off round, and we think these two attacks will have plenty of space to exploit this week.
- RB Leipzig v Monaco (4/7 with BetVictor) – Leipzig are aiming to replicate the kind of run Monaco went on last season. The Germans have a lot going forward, but they’ll struggle to keep out a Monaco side which stills packs a punch even without Mbappe.
- Shakhtar Donetsk v Napoli (4/6 with Ladbrokes) – Napoli’s defence are always vulnerable to conceding, and that’s likely to happen in this long trip to Ukraine. However, the Italians have an incredible forward line which should score a couple here.
- Tottenham v Borrussia Dortmund (4/7 with Bet365) – Spurs need to get off to a strong start in this tough group, but the Wembley effect is likely to hurt them. However, Dortmund aren’t exactly a force at the back, so we see Spurs scoring.
