The World Cup is here and whilst the first batch of group games are often tense, cagey affairs, with avoiding defeat being the number one priority, we’re confident we can take advantage. There are sure to be some 0-0 bore draws amongst the opening fixtures but we’re thinking positively and focussing instead on the better odds that are available for both teams to score given the perceived likelihood of some low scoring clashes. There WILL be goals and beautiful football – and most importantly both teams scoring – at the World Cup: it’s just a question of where and when…

- Argentina v Bosnia and Herzegovina (11/10 with BetVictor) – Stopping Lionel Messi and co from scoring is an almost impossible task, with Messi, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria as good an attacking foursome as there is at this World Cup. Bosnia are a rugged side and have one or two top class players but Argentina should have too much for them to be able to avoid defeat. That said, Edin Dzeko is scoring for fun at the moment and, full of confidence, we feel he is good for a consolation at least so at nice odds of 11/10 for BTTS we’ll be piling in.

- Germany v Portugal (evens with Coral) – Germany are fancied to do very well in Brazil but have slipped under the radar a little as the focus has been on South American sides and, increasingly, Spain. However, even without the injured Marco Reus, they have excellent options in midfield and creative areas and so will certainly have enough to score against a Portugal side who both score and concede a lot. Portugal beat Ireland 5-1 recently and Germany’s defence, undoubtedly their weakness, will struggle to contain Cristiano Ronaldo and co, making BTTS great value at evens.
- Ghana v USA (23/20 with BetVictor) – With Portugal and Germany favourites to qualify for the next round a win here is essential for these sides and so we expect this to be one of the most open games of the first week of the World Cup. We think this could be 2-1 either way, or perhaps 2-2, meaning BTTS is top value at odds of 23/20.

- Belgium v Algeria (7/5 with BetVictor) – At odds of 7/5 this is something of a long shot but we suspect Belgium may not be quite as good at this World Cup as some people expect. The Algerians will handle the conditions better than the favourites and in Islam Sliami they have a man who knows where the goal is. Odds of 7/5 for both teams to score are just too good to turn down here given Algeria are no mugs and Belgium conceded recently against Luxembourg!
- Russia v South Korea (13/10 with Coral) – Another outsider here at odds of 13/10, we think betting on both teams to score is a good option as both sides have some potent creative players. Russia were very tight in qualifying but we fancy they may wilt in the heat and in Son Heung-Min the Koreans have a forward who can take advantage.
